Week three

Our group is doing well, and we are ready to build. As said before, we will be building a solar still. I will include pictures of the solar still as we are building it. We all are doing great turning in our assignments, so no one has to be pulled out of the group. That is good because if someone were pulled, we would have to do a lot more work. I am ready and excited to start building. Our group is continuing to work, and we are figuring out problems that we didn’t see, thanks to Mr. Verkaik. We are excited to start.
Something we are waiting on, though is the materials we are going to use. Mr. Verkaik is going to the store to get wood and other things that we need, such as tools. We figured out new ways to modify the solar still, and we are pretty sure that it will work, but we are not absolutely sure. We are all working hard and are sure to work harder when we get the materials, which will come latest by monday. I think that this is really fun and a good experience. I never have learned this much about the geography and climate in Africa, and am glad to help them with clean water. This is a serious problem. People were crying when the watched and read Anne Frank. That was one person. Millions out there are dying of lack of clean water. We need to fix it.
On a happier note, for Current Events in Africa that I have to do, we found that toilet/shower water can be recycled into clean water. That means that we may be able to purify dirty toilet or shower water, but it would be hard. If we had to do that, I would go with shower or bath water because it is cleaner. The bathwater is called  “grey” water, while toilet water is called “black” water. Another few articles that I read is about how places in Africa site on a “vast reservoir” of clean water. There are other ideas that we could incorporate into our solar still, but we will stick to the basics. I just can’t believe how most would pick gatorade or pop over water, while people in Africa would drink about anything to stay alive. Remember this week how many people are dying over dirty water. Just think about it when you drink pretty much whatever you want.

More on solar stills

So, as you may have already known, our group is doing solar stills. We designed our own, and got our idea from the solarball. I have attached a link to our blueprint for the idea. Our group begins actually building the solar still next week! The link is: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1E9gWneGUVYZY8shQW27JPgPsPJnIV5AA67vJc9PtRB4/edit
I think that it is very useful, and we may even be able to re-use water from the solar still! We, as I may have said before, will be using only things that are used in Africa. I cannot express how excited I am for the project. I am really excited to help solve this problem. The link will show you how to build a solar still too, and I hope it works. Later!

Solar Stills

Our group is now planning on making something called a solar still. A solar still is a great way to clean water. You pour water in, and the water evaporates to the top. Then, the evaporated water slides down to the clean water part. The water falls, and eventually makes enough drinking water. Cool, huh? The only problem is that it might take a while, and some of the water is evaporated completely. We also need to try to find a way to get the water to them without them walking so far. Some problems that we need to work out, but we're doing okay. Another problem is that we need to customize it so it is our own creation. I have included some designs, and have them for you right here:
Both of them are different, but they have the same concept.
